My Creative Life #7 - Veggie Garden Blues

Vegetable gardens are lovely... when all goes well. Luckily these pictures were taken when my garden was at the height of perfection. You can see the tomatoes touching the sky in the background... two days later they were wilted and on their way to dead. It seems the wet soil on top was not indicative of the dry soil below. We thought the garden was getting plenty of water meanwhile the roots were starving. I cut back the tomatoes drastically and they finally seem to be coming back... but my dreams of canning sauces and salsas for the winter are devastated. I may have to buy a bushel of tomatoes to make up for it.

I did invest in canning supplies and have already made a few jars of pickles utilizing the bounty of pickling cukes which bounded out of the soil... until they withered and died off too. The peppers seem to be thriving still... but they also seem to be staying green even though I originally bought red and yellow pepper plants.

Perhaps the beauty of gardening is that of life. You don't know what you've got until its gone. Or on a more positive note... a few seeds can feed you for all seasons. Next year I will plan a bit better, more space, more plants and plenty more water.

Finnigan seems to enjoy the garden or maybe he just loves me so much...

Hi again Clever Monkey! I just checked out your blog and saw Finnigan. I agree with veggiegirl, he is adorable. I guess you saw Tanner on my blog, www.organicjourneyonline.blogspot.com. I have 2 other dogs who are scattered about on Woofing Wednesday photos. It seems we are both lovers of dogs and the simple life. Mine is a work in progress.
Good luck.

Hi Carrie, I did notice your other dogs... Oliver is so cute! I am partial to the yellow dogs though :)

I agree that it is a work in progress and I am also happy to read the story today of a man in his 80s who became a vegan... so better late than never too!

We are really luck to live in an age where we have so much support on the internet... I remember wanting to lead a vegetarian life a few years ago and had no idea what I would eat. Now I have trouble deciding what to make for dinner and rarely need to make the same thing twice.

I have much respect for your decision to eat vegetarian. My whole life has been spent eating meat and my husband would die if he didn't see meat on the plate. We do eat some dinners that don't include meat, but not many. My hat's off to you.

BTW, has Finnigan ever been involved in "Agility". Tanner, my Golden is really enjoying the classes, as is Oliver. It's a fun way to bond with them and get some exercise and fresh air.

Take care!

I wish I had a garden, though the last time I had space for one I also had trouble keeping it up!
